The Arc Mercer’s Business Enterprise Document Imaging Team had the unique opportunity to step into the heart of New Jersey’s historical preservation efforts during a private tour of the New Jersey State Archives. The visit was led by none other than Executive Director Joseph Klett, who generously offered his time and insight during an unforgettable session.
This hands-on experience was especially impactful for our associate employees—individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who play a vital role on our imaging team. Seeing the importance of archival work up close helped them connect the dots between the documents they scan each day and the long-term preservation of state history.
The Arc Mercer currently provides professional document imaging services for a number of partners, including the New Jersey State Police. During the tour, the team saw how archived materials are carefully maintained and stored, and learned about the life cycle of official records, from capture to permanent preservation. It was a chance to see their work in a broader historical context.
“The session really made an impact on the team,” said Arc Mercer’s Senior Director of Business Enterprises Orsola Andersen, “especially the Associate Employees by showing how important archiving is and how their role in document scanning helps with preservation.”
A Reminder of Why We Do This Work
Experiences like this tour remind all of us—across departments—what makes The Arc Mercer model so powerful. It’s not just about providing services; it’s about creating opportunities for growth, learning, and purpose. When associate employees saw firsthand how their daily work supports something as important as state preservation, they gained new confidence, motivation, and pride in their role.
To every staff member who helps make these experiences possible—through coaching, transportation, scheduling, and support, your efforts don’t go unnoticed.
