A Major Step Forward: Fair Wages for Consumer Employees



The Arc Mercer is proud to announce a major milestone—subminimum wage has been fully eliminated for all consumer employees. This achievement reflects the agency’s commitment to fairness, inclusion, and meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).


The Role of Staff in This Progress


This transition would not have been possible without the dedication and teamwork of our vocational staff, supervisors, and leadership. The commitment to supporting consumer employees as they transition from piece-rate pay to minimum wage has been a collective effort, ensuring that each individual receives the training and guidance needed to succeed in their roles.


Growth in Vocational Programs


In just the past year, significant progress has been made. Three consumers began working in our janitorial program in February, with two more set to join in March. These placements reflect the growing strength of our vocational programs and the direct impact staff members have in helping individuals build skills and confidence in the workplace.


Additionally, our community job placements continue to expand, with consumer employees thriving in roles that align with their interests and strengths. Their increased productivity and success are a testament to the supportive environment our staff helps create every day.

Eliminating subminimum wage is more than just a policy change—it’s a transformation in the lives of our consumer employees and their families. Earning a fair wage fosters greater financial independence, boosts self-esteem, and strengthens community inclusion. The work done by our staff has made these benefits a reality.
