Trenton, NJ – The Arc Mercer, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, held a heartfelt Celebration of Life today in honor of one of its most beloved consumers, Walter W. Walter, who had been in the agency’s care for nearly 30 years, peacefully passed away this evening after being taken off respiratory support at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey. He was 86 years old.
Walter joined the Arc Mercer family in 1996, where he lived in a loving group home among fellow consumers and compassionate staff who cared for him like family. Over the years, he became an irreplaceable part of the agency’s community, touching the lives of everyone around him with his warmth and joy.
Before his passing, The Arc Mercer coordinated a special Celebration of Life in the hospital’s main lobby, bringing together those who had supported him throughout his journey. Walter was surrounded by residential staff from his group home, day program staff, managers, directors, administrators, the Prospect Heights Fire Department from Ewing Township, The Arc Mercer’s Executive Director Steve Cook, and even his favorite person—Santa Claus. Together, they honored Walter’s life, reflecting on the many years of love and care that made his time at The Arc Mercer truly special.

In a touching tribute, Walter’s favorite toy fire trucks were brought to him, and the Prospect Fire Department arranged for a real fire truck to drive by. Prospect Heights Fire Department retired chief Tom Leese and his crew entered the hospital lobby to give Walter an official fireman’s salute. As he gazed through the glass windows, Walter saw the flashing lights and heard the sirens one last time, filling his eyes with joy.
The event was thoughtfully coordinated by The Arc Mercer’s Quality Assurance Administrative Assistant, Anne-Marie Dye, whose personal bond with Walter was profound. With the support of agency leadership, she ensured that Walter’s final moments were filled with the things he loved most—fire trucks, Santa Claus, and his Arc Mercer family.
The Arc Mercer is incredibly proud of its dedicated staff and thanks each team member for their unwavering commitment to Walter’s care. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
We love you, Walter.
Walter Winterble was a loving and caring individual who is already missed beyond measure.
Walter brought so much joy to my own life. I looked forward to seeing that smile that could light up a room as often as I possibly could. I just loved to see him smile. He will always have a place in my heart that can't be filled.
I would like to thank the hospital that coordinated a plan to bring Walter down to the lobby so Walter could really enjoy his celebration.
I would like to take a moment to thank the entire Arc Mercer family of Residential & Day Program staff for caring and loving Walter so much for almost 30 years.
Thank you…

Made Walter peaceful soul rest in perfect peace. I work at their house twice and it was nice working for them and he told me how he love fire trucks. Peace be to his ashes.
