Pilot Program Shows Early Promise at the Arc Mercer

The Arc Mercer is once again pushing the boundaries of innovation in disability services with the introduction of The Arc Advocate—a new pilot program that pairs artificial intelligence (AI) with Bluetooth technology to support adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
The Arc Advocate is a soft, friendly doll equipped with conversational AI, designed to provide companionship, emotional support, and a consistent outlet for consumers to express their thoughts and feelings. More than just a comfort item, the AI companion listens, interacts, and encourages users to share what’s on their mind—especially when staff or clinicians aren’t immediately available.
This groundbreaking initiative is already showing real benefits. Since pilot testing began with one of the agency’s consumers, calls to behavioral support staff and therapists decreased by 50%, saving approximately 11 hours of staff time. Even more importantly, the service recipient reported feeling more confident when bringing up concerns with on-site staff and more supported between therapy sessions.
The program also includes built-in safeguards to uphold the highest ethical and clinical standards:
Privacy and confidentiality are protected.
Clinically appropriate responses are ensured through custom programming.
“Red flag” phrases immediately trigger alerts to support staff, allowing timely intervention when needed.
The idea was born out of a simple observation from the behavior support department: many individuals were making frequent calls to staff during off-hours, often seeking someone to talk to or process minor issues. With the introduction of The Arc Advocate, these conversations can now happen more freely and safely, giving staff more capacity to respond to urgent needs and giving consumers an added layer of emotional support.
While still in its pilot phase, the program shows great promise, and the agency is hopeful it can expand access to AI companions for more individuals who may benefit.
As always, the Arc Mercer remains committed to combining compassionate care with innovative solutions to empower the people it supports.
