At The Arc Mercer, caring for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is more than a profession, it is a calling. That commitment was powerfully demonstrated during January’s severe winter storm, when staff across the agency went above and beyond, many at personal risk, to ensure the individuals supported by The Arc Mercer remained safe, cared for, and never alone.
During its recent Team Atmosphere Committee Awards celebration, The Arc Mercer recognized Hamilton Township Police Officers Anthony Valdora and Brandon Walker for their extraordinary compassion and service after assisting Arc Mercer shift manager Alicia Davis, who became stranded for several hours in hazardous conditions while attempting to report for her overnight shift at the Phaeton Group Home.
Despite dangerous weather and impassable roads, Davis’s focus remained clear: reaching the home where individuals depended on her care.
Her determination reflects a culture deeply rooted within The Arc Mercer, one where staff consistently put the needs of those served above their own comfort, convenience, and at times, even their own safety.
As Executive Director Steve Cook noted during the ceremony, Davis was in a dangerous situation because of a simple but profound belief: the individuals in Arc Mercer’s care were counting on her, and she was determined to be there.
That level of dedication is not unusual at The Arc Mercer, it is a defining quality of the agency’s workforce.
A Mission Driven by Heart
The celebration also included a special “Snow Angels” recognition, honoring employees and community members who made extraordinary efforts during the storm to maintain continuity of care, protect residents, and support one another during an emergency.
For families, community partners, and stakeholders, these stories represent something larger than heroism in a single moment. They reflect the caliber of people behind The Arc Mercer’s mission, professionals who approach caregiving with compassion, urgency, and unwavering commitment.
This is what quality care looks like: not simply meeting needs, but answering a call to serve under the most difficult circumstances.
Community Partnership That Strengthens Care
The Arc Mercer also recognized the leadership and compassion shown by the Hamilton Township Police Department, whose officers remained with Davis for hours until help arrived and ensured she reached safety.
Remarks from Police Chief Ken DeBoskey and Mayor Jeff Martin underscored the power of service, community partnership, and stepping forward when others are in need.
Their support serves as a reminder that when organizations and community leaders work together, resilience grows stronger, and lives are better protected.
The Heart of The Arc Mercer
In moments of crisis, values are tested, and character is revealed.
The response during January’s storm demonstrated what families and stakeholders have long known: The Arc Mercer is powered by extraordinary people. People whose compassion drives them forward, whose professionalism remains steady under pressure, and whose commitment to the individuals they support never wavers.
That passion is what makes The Arc Mercer exceptional, and what continues to set the standard for care in our community.
