Snow Angels Recognized for Extraordinary Efforts During Winter Storms

This past winter was one of the snowiest in recent memory. While severe weather can slow down many organizations, the Arc Mercer operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rain, snow, or shine. When major snowstorms created difficult conditions across the region, staff members stepped up in remarkable ways to ensure that the agency remained fully operational and that the individuals supported by the Arc Mercer continued to receive the highest quality of care.

Through the agency’s Snow Angel Program, several employees were recognized for going above and beyond during these challenging conditions. These staff members were honored at the TAC Awards Luncheon and received $250 gift cards in recognition of their outstanding dedication and service.

Here are the stories behind this year’s Snow Angels.

Juan Encarnacion – Metekunk Group Home

When severe weather made driving unsafe on January 25, Juan Encarnacion immediately began searching for ways to support his staff and ensure coverage at Metekunk Group Home. After determining that his rear-wheel-drive vehicle was unsafe to operate, Juan attempted to walk approximately 1.5 miles in extreme conditions to retrieve an agency four-wheel-drive vehicle. When that proved too dangerous, he found another solution, borrowing a neighbor’s four-wheel-drive Yukon.

With the borrowed vehicle, Juan transported staff to and from their shifts, ensuring safe coverage for the evening. He also went out of his way to shovel out Jennah Mulbah’s stranded vehicle and relocate it safely to the group home. After completing these efforts, Juan continued assisting by transporting additional staff members who were unable to leave their homes due to snowed-in vehicles. His persistence and problem-solving exemplify true leadership and dedication.

Jennah Mulbah – Metekunk Group Home

While driving to work during a storm, Jennah Mulbah’s Hyundai Elantra became stuck in the snow on Malaga Drive and could not be moved from the middle of the roadway. Rather than turning back, Jennah secured the vehicle as best she could, then walked through the storm to make it to work. Upon arrival, she immediately contacted her manager, Juan Encarnacion, to report the situation and ensure the vehicle could be addressed later. Jennah’s determination and commitment ensured the home remained properly staffed despite the dangerous conditions.

Alecia Davis – Phaeton Group Home

Shift Manager Alecia Davis became stranded while driving to her overnight shift when her vehicle was trapped in heavy snow and ice. Alecia promptly contacted the overnight director to report her location and confirm she was safe. She remained stranded for five to six hours in extremely difficult weather conditions before her vehicle was eventually towed. Afterward, the Hamilton Police Department escorted her safely to Phaeton Group Home, where she arrived around 4:30 AM to begin her shift. Throughout the ordeal, Alecia maintained consistent communication and demonstrated remarkable resilience and professionalism.

Kathy Rhead – Day Program

During the storm, Kathy Rhead demonstrated outstanding leadership and preparation. She worked proactively with the Residential team to coordinate assignments and ensure staff understood expectations ahead of the storm. On the day of the weather event, Kathy personally cleared snow from 12 vans at the Day Program, ensuring the vehicles would be ready when operations resumed. Her foresight and hands-on support helped the agency return to normal operations quickly and safely.

The Arc Mercer’s Snow Angel recipients represent the very best of the agency’s mission-driven culture. Their willingness to push through difficult conditions, support their colleagues, and prioritize the wellbeing of the individuals served is a powerful reminder of the dedication that keeps the Arc Mercer running every day.

Congratulations to this year’s Snow Angels, and thank you to all staff who stepped up during this challenging winter season.
