Arc Mercer’s recent outing to Six Flags Great Adventure wasn’t just a fun day—it was a living example of how community-based activities contribute to overall well-being for the people we serve.

Research in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities consistently shows that community integration supports cognitive stimulation, social skill development, and emotional health. By providing opportunities for individuals to participate in activities they truly enjoy, we reinforce self-determination, improve quality of life, and strengthen social inclusion.

At Six Flags, our consumers were able to choose the experiences that matched their own comfort levels and interests—from high-speed roller coasters to interactive games. This freedom of choice fosters autonomy, builds confidence, and increases engagement. Equally important, outings like this allow our consumers to participate in mainstream community settings, breaking down barriers and increasing visibility for people with disabilities.

The success of this trip is a reminder that “outside the box” activities are not just recreational—they are essential. They meet important social, emotional, and developmental needs while aligning with our mission to help each person live a full and meaningful life.

A special shout out goes to our Recreation Department for making this event possible. The planning, energy, and commitment ensured our consumers had an unforgettable day filled with adventure and joy.
