The City of Trenton proudly recognizes April as Autism Awareness Month—a time to honor and support individuals on the autism spectrum, their families, and the organizations that champion inclusion and understanding. On Thursday, April 10, Trenton City Hall was aglow in blue as community members gathered for the city’s official Autism Awareness Month Ceremony, “Light It Up Blue.”
Among those in attendance was Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora, along with several inspiring guest speakers who shared their personal experiences and perspectives. One of the evening’s highlights came from the Arc Mercer’s very own Jade, a 25-year-old consumer who resides in one of the agency’s supervised apartments.
Jade bravely took the stage to share her story as a young woman living with autism.
Her speech offered a powerful glimpse into both the challenges and accomplishments that have shaped her journey. Jade spoke candidly about her difficulties with social skills, particularly with maintaining eye contact—an area she continues to work on with great determination. “I am getting better at it every day,” she said with pride.
Jade also shared her success in the Arc Mercer’s employment training program, where she is currently enrolled in the food service track. She earned her ServeSafe certificate and spoke enthusiastically about her experience working a catering job at a fundraising event. “It was an amazing experience,” she told the audience.
Outside of work, Jade has discovered a newfound passion for music and drama through the Arc Mercer’s evening recreation clubs. She has performed in several productions at the Kirby Arts Center, where she feels she can truly express herself. “It is a place where I can truly be myself,” she said.
A particularly heartfelt moment came when Jade spoke about her dream of one day owning a pet dog. She expressed how important it is for everyone to experience the comfort and companionship that a pet can bring. The Arc Mercer is currently exploring ways to make this dream a reality for residents in its supervised apartments and group homes.
“Living with autism has its challenges, but it has also made me who I am—a determined hard worker and a passionate person,” Jade concluded.
The Arc Mercer is incredibly proud of Jade for using her voice to promote awareness and advocacy, and for representing the agency with such grace and authenticity. Her message was a powerful reminder that with the right support, individuals with autism can thrive, inspire, and lead.
