At The Arc Mercer, community integration and creative expression are not just ideals—they are core practices that shape programming and opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Recent initiatives led by the agency’s Day Program and Recreation Department have brought these values to life in meaningful, impactful ways.

One standout project was the premiere of Love Wars, a consumer-written and produced short film. Written by an Arc Mercer consumer and brought to life by the Arc Mercer TV/Production team, the film starred several Day Program participants and debuted to packed audiences at Arc Mercer Headquarters.

The gymnasium was transformed into a movie theater for the event, which featured multiple screenings, an audience Q&A, and a celebration of storytelling, inclusion, and performance. The film’s success underscored the importance of providing platforms for self-expression and the power of seeing one’s ideas realized on screen.

The Recreation Department also hosted a highly successful Talent Show, showcasing more than 30 consumer performances ranging from singing and dancing to comedic routines. The event celebrated individuality, confidence, and the wide range of talents within the Arc Mercer community.

Winners were recognized for their show-stopping performances, and the event doubled as a fundraiser—raising $178 to support future recreational programming and outings.

Efforts to promote meaningful community inclusion have extended beyond performance and into volunteerism. A group from the Campus Day Program recently partnered with The Maker’s Place, a diaper bank in Trenton, NJ.

Consumers worked together to count, package, and prepare diapers for distribution to local families in need.

This partnership reflects Arc Mercer’s commitment to fostering purpose-driven experiences while building connections with external community organizations. Projects like this provide valuable opportunities for participants to contribute to larger missions with real-world impact.

The Recreation Department is also expanding efforts to connect consumers with local first responders through a newly established pool league. This innovative program pairs Arc Mercer participants with police officers and other first responders for casual games of billiards at the on-site arcade.

Early events have already proven successful in creating authentic, trust-building interactions. By engaging in shared activities, consumers and community professionals alike benefit from new perspectives, friendships, and the breaking down of social barriers.

These initiatives reflect a strategic approach to enhancing quality of life, encouraging independence, and celebrating the abilities of every individual served. Whether through film, stage, community service, or inclusive recreation, Arc Mercer continues to create spaces where creativity thrives and community connections flourish.

Together, these programs highlight the agency’s dedication to providing dynamic, person-centered experiences that enrich lives and strengthen the bonds between consumers and the broader community.
