The Arc Mercer proudly participated in Trenton’s “Light It Up Blue” event at City Hall in recognition of World Autism Day, a gathering dedicated to increasing awareness, understanding, and acceptance of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Held at Trenton, New Jersey City Hall, the event brought together community members, advocates, and local leaders to highlight the importance of inclusion and support for individuals with autism. Among the most impactful moments of the day was a powerful speech delivered by Brian Lopez, a consumer from the Arc Mercer’s Campus Day Program.

Brian, who is also a talented member of the agency’s TV and video production team, shared his personal journey with honesty, strength, and reflection. In his speech, he spoke about what autism means to him, describing it as a difference in how the brain works rather than a limitation. He emphasized that being different does not mean being less, and encouraged the audience to “see people with autism” for their strengths, struggles, and value.

He also spoke candidly about his personal growth, including learning to manage anger, overcoming experiences of bullying, and building confidence through supportive relationships with family, educators, and mentors. Brian highlighted meaningful milestones in his journey, including interviewing public officials, contributing to Arc Mercer media productions, and selling his artwork at a public art show where his work received strong interest and recognition.

A key theme throughout Brian’s message was resilience and self-acceptance. He encouraged the audience to embrace authenticity and reminded listeners of the importance of patience, understanding, and love. His closing message, inspired by Bad Bunny’s words, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love”, resonated deeply with attendees.

Brian’s success at the event reflected not only his preparation and dedication, but also the ongoing support system surrounding him, including his family, peers, and staff who continue to encourage his growth and confidence.

The Arc Mercer also recognized the collaborative effort behind the event itself. Staff, coordinators, and participants contributed to making the day a meaningful success, ensuring that individuals with autism were represented, heard, and celebrated in a public and empowering space.

Following the event, Brian’s performance was widely praised by attendees and colleagues alike. His ability to communicate his experiences with clarity and authenticity served as a reminder of the importance of providing platforms for self-advocacy and expression.

The Arc Mercer extends its appreciation to everyone who participated in and supported the “Light It Up Blue” event. Opportunities like this continue to reinforce the agency’s commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and community engagement.

Moments like these not only raise awareness, they amplify voices that deserve to be heard.
