Arc Mercer’s Special Needs Alliance for Pride (SNAP) is more than just a club — it’s a safe, inclusive community where Arc Mercer staff and consumers come together to advocate for both the LGBTQ+ and special needs communities.

What makes SNAP truly unique is its integrated approach: individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who identify as LGBTQ+ actively collaborate alongside staff and allies. It is the first group of its kind at the Arc Mercer and continues to set a high standard for inclusivity and empowerment.

At the club’s most recent meeting, the newly appointed President, Marissa Rosato (Behavior Specialist), led an inspiring discussion that opened the floor for everyone to share the different ways they’ve made a positive impact on others.

In attendance were Theresa Wilson, Director of Training, and LaShana Deacon, Recreation Manager, along with special guests Angel Cruz and Chelsea Rondinaru from Hyacinth, and Ricardo Kairios from Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County. Several Arc Mercer consumers were also present, offering thoughtful and heartfelt contributions throughout the conversation.

The first half of the meeting sparked an impactful dialogue about the importance of advocacy and inclusion, followed by a lively brainstorming session around how SNAP can continue to grow. Ideas included creating more fun, social activities while continuing to amplify LGBTQ+ and IDD voices. Future members can look forward to movie nights, visits to the farm, bowling outings, game nights, and much more!

The representatives from Hyacinth and Rutgers expressed their support and offered to collaborate on upcoming activities.

The meeting concluded with a hands-on stitching and knitting activity led by the Hyacinth representatives, who provided yarn and supplies and taught attendees new skills. The energy and participation throughout the entire session made it clear, SNAP is a space where people feel seen, supported, and inspired.

We’d like to thank all of the current SNAP members and partners who helped make this meeting such a success, and we invite any Arc Mercer staff and consumers who are interested in being part of this welcoming, inclusive community to join us.

Whether you’re passionate about LGBTQ+ advocacy, looking to support a friend or colleague, or simply want to be part of a group that celebrates diversity, SNAP is the place for you!
