Consumers and staff from the Arc Mercer’s Special Needs Day Program 1450 and Dual Diagnosis Program took an active role in the recent Medicaid rally at the New Jersey Statehouse.

This powerful event brought together individuals with disabilities, advocates, and supporters to rally against proposed Medicaid cuts that threaten essential services.

The Arc Mercer’s presence was felt throughout the rally, as consumers proudly held signs they helped create, chanted in unison, and cheered on speakers advocating for their rights. For many, this was an opportunity to make their voices heard on an issue that directly impacts their daily lives.

The signs, crafted collaboratively by both consumers and staff, were a symbol of unity and determination in the fight for continued support and services.

Beyond participating, Arc Mercer consumers fully immersed themselves in the experience. They engaged in discussions, learned from speakers, and expressed their own concerns about the potential loss of Medicaid funding. The energy of the day was palpable as the crowd rallied with calls to protect vital services that enable individuals with disabilities to live independently and with dignity.

The Arc Mercer remains committed to advocacy efforts that uplift the voices of those it serves. The agency recognizes the importance of Medicaid in providing healthcare, transportation, and community-based support, all of which are critical to the well-being of individuals with disabilities. Events like this rally highlight the strength of the disability community and reinforce the necessity of continued advocacy.

Seeing consumers so engaged and passionate about their rights was truly inspiring. Their participation in this rally was not just about standing against cuts—it was about standing up for themselves and their futures.

The Arc Mercer is proud to support them and grateful for our incredible staff who help them to ensure their voices are heard.

Take Action: Join Our Letter Writing Campaign

Advocacy does not stop at the rally. The Arc Mercer encourages all community members to continue to be engaged by participating in our letter-writing campaign to bring awareness to these proposed changes and their potential impact.

Letters have a powerful impact on representatives, and your voice matters.

If you are an individual with a disability who receives services from the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities, please use the red letter.

If you are the parent of a child with a disability, please use the blue letter.

If you are an ally, meaning that you are neither an individual with a disability nor the parent of a child with a disability, then please use the purple letter.

We encourage you to write to your congressional representative, as well as to New Jersey Senators Andy Kim and Cory Booker. While emails can be effective, handwritten letters sharing personal experiences with Medicaid can make a significant impact.
