This Fourth of July, residents from across Arc Mercer’s group homes came together for a backyard BBQ at the Murray House. It was a day filled with food, music, water balloon games, and connection. But beyond the fun, events like these have real, measurable value in the lives of the people we support.

Community-building events are not just a nice-to-have—they are an important part of supporting mental, emotional, and social health.

Research shows that individuals with IDD experience better outcomes when they are socially connected, included in group activities, and given opportunities to engage in leisure and recreation in meaningful ways. These kinds of gatherings help reduce isolation, increase self-esteem, and build relationships, factors that directly contribute to a higher quality of life.

Social interaction in natural, relaxed settings also supports the development of communication and adaptive skills, especially when staff engage side-by-side with consumers. It strengthens trust, encourages participation, and reinforces the idea that fun and joy are not separate from care, they’re a part of it.

Staff who helped coordinate and participate in the BBQ played a critical role in creating this experience. From organizing food and music to jumping into a water balloon fight, your presence helped create a supportive, inclusive environment where our residents could be themselves and enjoy the holiday—just like anyone else.

Thank you to everyone who made the event possible. These are the moments that contribute to long-term well-being, and they remind us that some of the most impactful support we can offer doesn’t come from a program or a plan—it comes from showing up, together.
