Building Community Connections Through Recreation

Every recreation outing represents more than a day on the calendar. It represents an opportunity for someone to build confidence, strengthen friendships, experience something new, and become more connected to their community.

That commitment to meaningful engagement continues to be a priority throughout Arc Mercer's Residential Services. During the first six months of 2026, residential staff organized 1,889 community recreation outings for the individuals who live in the agency's homes—an average of approximately 315 outings each month. These experiences range from sporting events and community festivals to local attractions, seasonal celebrations, and countless opportunities for individuals to enjoy life beyond their homes.

One recent outing brought nearly every residential consumer together for Residential Kickball Day at Miracle League Field in Hamilton Township.

The event welcomed consumers, residential staff, and members of the Hamilton Police Department for an afternoon centered on inclusion, teamwork, and fun.

Some consumers eagerly stepped onto the field to kick the ball and run the bases, while others enjoyed cheering alongside friends from the sidelines. Regardless of how they participated, everyone had the opportunity to be part of the experience.

For many individuals, participating in community recreation means stepping outside familiar routines and trying something new. Events like Kickball Day help build confidence while encouraging physical activity, social interaction, and lasting relationships. They also demonstrate the value of creating environments where every individual can participate in ways that are comfortable and meaningful to them.

The success of these outings is made possible by Arc Mercer's residential staff, who help transform recreational activities into memorable experiences. Their encouragement and support allows consumers to explore new opportunities while strengthening the relationships that contribute to a high quality of life.

As Arc Mercer continues to expand opportunities for community engagement, recreation remains an important reflection of the agency's commitment to person-centered supports. With 1,889 community outings already provided in 2026, averaging more than 300 opportunities for recreation every month, each event reflects the agency's ongoing investment in helping individuals live active, connected, and fulfilling lives.
