Pre Vocational Training Program

Summary of Arc Mercer’s Pre Vocational Training Program

Under the umbrella of The Arc Institute, a certified trade school, The Arc Mercer offers the Pre-Vocational Training Program: a partnership with local Boards of Education providing a combination of traditional academics and community-based vocational experiences designed to fully prepare students for life after high school.

Our goal is to offer students practical work experiences so they can make informed choices about career options. The on-the-job training offered immerses students in the typical job site, allowing them to experience work culture, complete expected tasks, and learn appropriate social interactions with both their supervisor and co-workers. The end result is a student who is fully prepared to successfully enter the workforce after graduation!

Students participate in work experiences in the vocational track of their choice three days per week (either in AM or PM session). Offered tracks include: custodial services, food services, early childcare and health services, assembly services, and landscaping services.

In addition to specific job training, each student participates in alternate activities that supplement their work skills training and teach additional skills needed for success in employment and life including:
  • Weekly workplace computer training: keyboarding skills, resume development, effective use of the Internet, and refine job-searching skills

  • Weekly community-based life skills training: banking, travel training for public transportation, identification of community resources, and budgeting money/effective shopping
