As you’ll see from our brief history, The Arc Mercer was founded 55 years ago by a group of 12 parents who wanted to give their children with mental retardation the opportunity to learn, socialize and grow in a nurturing environment. In other words, they wanted their children to have the same opportunities available to typical children their age.

Since that time, The Arc Mercer has experienced continuous growth, and today serves more than 1,000 people with mental and physical disabilities each day. Through it all, we have continued to hold fast to the basic principles on which The Arc Mercer was founded.

The past year has been an exciting one for all of us here at The Arc Mercer. Our new slogan – Empowering Lives Through Opportunity – sums up exactly what we’re all about. Through our myriad of programs and services, we have helped thousands of persons with mental and/or physical disabilities reach their full potential by empowering them with the resources and skills they need to integrate into their community. We’ve also empowered family members and other caregivers, by offering them information and support through programs such as respite care and after care, and by introducing them to a network of other resources as well.

The Arc Mercer was founded by concerned, motivated members of the community. Today, we continue to rely on members of our community for support. Contributions of time and other resources from businesses, political leaders, civic groups and private citizens – like you -- have allowed us to continue doing what we do best: Empowering lives through opportunity.
